What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

Traditional methods of biofilm management involve scaling with hand instruments, ultrasonic scalers, rubber cup polishing, brushes and pastes. However, with this advancement in dentistry supported by scientific evidence, airflow technology and powder are used to remove biofilm more thoroughly, more efficiently and more comfortably.

Why GBT?

This contemporary approach begins with biofilm removal using air-flowing technology. The erythritol based powder used guarantees targeted and gentle removal of the soft biofilm. This is followed by the precise removal of mineralized build-up with PIEZON®; which offers a quieter and more comfortable experience and potentially, a shorter treatment time. Polishing paste and rubber cups are no longer necessary with air flow technology.

The Process:

Assessment – The hygienist begins with her usual oral exam; first  you pre-rinse with an anti-microbial rinse and then they do an oral exam to check the health of your teeth and gums.

Disclose – Biofilm (plaque) is made fully visible by painting your teeth with a substance that temporarily dyes potentially problem areas in your mouth. The dye exposes where new and old biofilm is present to make it easier to spot and remove.

Motivate – The  hygienists will then explain the differences of the colors of the dyed plaque and help you see any areas you may be missing to help with your home care.

Airflow – An air polisher with warm water and erythritol powder is then used to remove the buildup of plaque on the teeth and surrounding soft tissue and tongue and also helps to remove stains and discoloration. It is safe to use on natural and artificial teeth, including implants. A special nozzle called Perioflow may be used to reach deeper pockets, if needed.

Piezon – To finish the remaining physical part of your treatment, Piezon Scaling is used to remove any harder tartar deposits. This is a quieter, more comfortable precision method of scaling hard deposits. This method also reduces manual scaling with hand instruments.

Check – The dentist will come in to perform the oral examination.

Recare – The final step involves ensuring that you have a healthy and happy mouth by scheduling your next routine cleaning visit.
